This year marks the first edition of Cafe Kyiv Week. Under the umbrella of the Cafe Kyiv brand, various events will take place throughout Berlin from 22 February to 1 March 2026. The Vidnova Forum 2026 brings together engaged practitioners, community leaders, and changemakers from Ukraine, Germany, and across Europe to
explore how solidarity turns into action \u2014 and how civil society can actively work with Ukraine while shaping a shared democratic future.<\/p>\n

Building on lived experience, collective knowledge, and cross-border cooperation, the forum focuses on solution-oriented engagement at the intersection of local engagement, migration, and communication. Vidnova 2026 creates space to move beyond analysis toward participation, responsibility, and co-creation.<\/p>\n

You will engage in in-depth conversations and collaborative formats that highlight concrete initiatives, transferable practices, and emerging alliances. The
forum foregrounds the role of the Ukrainian global community, civil society actors, and European partners in sustaining support, strengthening democratic
resilience, and contributing to recovery and rebuilding \u2014 both in Ukraine and in other European countries<\/p>\n

Europe is facing a new urgency to become better prepared for various threats to its security in the context of hybrid warfare and pressure from superpowers on the foundations of its free and liberal democratic societies. The concept of comprehensive defense is offering a framework for an integrated approach to resilience and readiness for crisis response involving multiple stakeholders.<\/p>\n

Deliberately targeting the very basics of civil life, the Russian war against Ukraine forced the civil society to take initiative itself and find ad-hoc formats of cooperation with local and military authorities.<\/p>\n

Ukrainian NGO \u201eExpert Resource Gender in Detail”” brought together a pool of experts to prepare a series of reports analyzing various aspects of Ukraine’s emergent comprehensive defense practices through a gender mainstreaming lens. This approach highlights the critical importance of empowering and engaging women in defense efforts, demonstrating how gender perspectives optimize the use of scarce human resources by leveraging diverse skills and experiences across all sectors of societal resilience.<\/p>\n

The expert roundtable will focus on care work and civil defense as critical components of comprehensive defence strategies, drawing lessons from Ukraine’s wartime experience for Germany and Europe. Experts will discuss how social infrastructure and civilian protection systems can be strengthened through civilian engagement, volunteer coordination, and institutional frameworks \u2014 building on Nordic best practices and Ukraine’s practical implementation under pressure.<\/p>\n

In a keynote speech, Carina \u00d6debrink MP, Special Representative for the Return of Deported Ukrainian Children, will present the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly’s commitment to the abducted Ukrainian children and discuss it with Yana Melnychenko from Kyiv and Frank Mischo from Kindernothilfe in Duisburg.
Katya Andrusz, spokesperson for ODIHR, will present the numerous projects with which ODIHR promotes human rights and democratic resilience in Ukraine.
A panel on \u2018The OSCE as a platform for dialogue for peace and stability and humanitarian engagement for the protection of children’s rights and human rights in Ukraine\u2019 will discuss, among other things, with Daniela Schneider, the envoy at the Swiss Embassy in Berlin, Tobias Winkler, Member of the German Bundestag and head of the German delegation to the OSCE PA, and Dr Lorenz Barth, responsible for the OSCE at the Federal Foreign Office, will discuss the projects planned for 2026 by the Swiss OSCE Chairmanship for Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Warming borscht. Wareniki, dill, beetroot, syrnyky and holubtsi. Ukrainian cuisine is hearty and comforting, rustic and refined at the same time \u2013 food that fills you up and brings people together.<\/p>\n

In this SFT special, we are bringing this cuisine (once again) to Markthalle Neun as part of Cafe Kyiv: as an invitation to take a seat, try some food and strike up a conversation. It’s about traditions, shared tables, solidarity \u2013 and what remains when so much is uncertain: community.<\/p>\n

Because while we eat, we must not forget one thing: Russia is still waging its brutal war of aggression against Ukraine \u2013 and thus also against democracy, freedom and self-determination.<\/p>\n

For this reason, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, together with numerous partner organisations, is hosting Cafe Kyiv for the fourth time on Monday, 23 February 2026 \u2013 as a place of encounter, exchange and clear stance. With our Street Food Special on 26 February, we are continuing this tradition and creating space for encounters in everyday life: low-threshold, open and in the heart of Kreuzberg.<\/p>\n

Opening Speech by the director Oleksandr Snytsia + Film Screening + Panel Talk with Eva Yakubovska and Patryk Szostak
The event is presented as part of the international exhibition dedicated to Vasyl Stus and this year\u2019s Cafe Kyiv, highlighting questions of freedom, cultural resilience, and the continuity of Ukrainian intellectual resistance. It will open with a speech by the film\u2019s director, Oleksandr Synytsia, followed by the screening and a panel discussion with Eva Yakubovska and Patryk Szostak.
The film offers an intimate portrait of the literary critic and dissident Ivan Dziuba, a key figure of the Ukrainian Sixtiers movement, initiator of the protest at the premiere of Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, and author of Internationalism or Russification? Through the voice of his wife Marta, the film reveals their 62-year partnership, shaped by loyalty, love, and courage under continuous KGB pressure.<\/p>\n

What does war mean for people who have experienced it themselves?
Wars are often described in terms of strategies, numbers, and political developments. But war is always also an experience that interrupts biographies and changes the course of lives. It raises questions about freedom, dignity, and the ability of human beings to cope with extreme situations.
The focus is particularly on the period after the war: returning home does not automatically mean arriving. Many returnees have to find their place in their families and society again, while memories continue to have an effect and everyday life only slowly takes shape again. Between remembering and moving on, there is a transition in which identity and the future are renegotiated.
Engaging with these voices invites us to listen and to focus more closely on the human dimension of war.<\/p>\n

Due to the sensitive and personal nature of the stories, the event will deliberately take place in a small, protected setting in order to create space for calm, trust, and attentive listening.<\/p>\n
